The 2009 Student Design Competition, sponsored by the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) Technical Committee on Architectural Acoustics (TCAA) and the Newman Student Award Fund, was judged at the 157th ASA Meeting in Portland, Oregon, in May 2009. The project involved the development of a building at a small college to house an interfaith chapel and community outreach center. There were 21 entries submitted from a number of different schools. The panel of judges included: Jacob Friesen (J. Friesen Consultant in Acoustics, Los Angeles); Edward Logsdon (D.L. Adams Associates, Denver, Colorado); Andy Miller (BAI, Austin, Texas); Michelle Vigeant (University of Hartford); and Steven Weeks (Boora Architects, Portland).

The 2009 Awards have been funded by a grant from the Wenger Foundation through the ASA's Newman Student Award Fund. Wenger has generously agreed to fund the awards annually in memory of the firm's founder, Harry Wenger, who was a long-time friend of education in music and in architectural acoustics.
