Congratulations to 2018 Newman Medalists

A number of students received Newman Student Medals in 2018. They include:

  • Elena Badino (Politecnico di Torino): Acoustic performance-based design: Exploration of the effects of different geometries and acoustical properties of an urban façade on the mitigation of chatting noise in a street canyon, as nominated by Dr. Arianna Astolfi and Dr. Louena Shtrepi
  • Eva Johnston-Iafelcie (Ryerson Univ.): Impact of curved surfaces in performance space, as nominated by Dr. Ramani Ramakrishnan
  • Jonathan Kawasaki (Rensselaer Poly. Inst.): Experimental investigations on acoustic diffractions using a portable goniometer with high angular resolution and large radii, as nominated by Dr. Ning Xiang
  • Martin Lawless (Pennsylvania State University): Assessing the auditory and reward responses to room acoustics and music using functional magnetic resonance imaging, as nominated by Dr. Michelle Vigeant
  • Jacob Ott and Paul Mangelsdorf (University of Hartford): Acoustic absorption study of an architectural façade for acoustic distinctions, as nominated by Dr. Bob Celmer
  • Carl Ruegger (London South Bank Univ.): The production of transparent absorbers using the principle of micro-perforation, as nominated by Dr. Stephen Dance
  • Jamie Spary (London South Bank Univ.): Acoustic absorption at discrete angles using a PU Sensor, as nominated by Dr. Stephen Dance

2018 Acoustical Society of America Student Design Competition Announced

The announcement for the 2018 Acoustical Society of America Student Design Competition has been released.  The competition involves the design of a new municipal building including a court room and a community hall.  This year the competition allows posters to include a digital code (e.g. a QR code) for the inclusion of supplementary material.  Teams must register by April 1, 2018, and final entries that are not hand-delivered at the conference must be received by April 30, 2018.  More information can be found here.

30th Anniversary Celebration at Acoustics ’17 in Boston

The Robert Bradford Newman Student Award Fund is celebrating its 30th Anniversary!  Please join us for a special 30th Anniversary Celebration Event at the upcoming Acoustics ’17 meeting in Boston, on Monday, June 26, 2017 from 4:30-6:30 PM at the Hynes Convention Center Room 102.  All donors (individual and corporate) who submit donations to our 30th Anniversary campaign prior to June 22, 2017 will be recognized and thanked at the celebration event.  Preliminary copies of the Robert Bradford Newman Lectures on Architectural Acoustics from 1970 (audio files and transcription) will also be distributed to our donors from this campaign.
